What is the Lymphatic System?
The lymphatic system is like the circulatory system, comprising of a network of lymphatic vessels that carry a clear fluid called lymph.
Lymph is circulated around the body, surrounding and bathing the body tissues. It contains a high number of lymphocytes that help fight infection.
This then drains into the lymph vessels directionally toward the heart. The fluid then flows through the lymphatic system to the biggest lymph vessel - the thoracic duct. The thoracic duct then empties back into the blood circulation.
The function of the lymphatic system is part of the immune system and to drain excess fluid from tissues.
What is Lymphoedema?
Lymphoedema is tissue swelling due to the failure of lymph drainage. This can be caused by damage or disruption to the lymphatic system.
There are two main types of lymphoedema:
•Primary lymphoedema –
which develops at birth or shortly after and is caused by faulty genes.
•Secondary lymphoedema –
caused by damage to the lymphatic system as a result of an infection, injury, trauma, or cancer.
Secondary lymphoedema often develops as a side effect of cancer treatment.
Surgery is often necessary to remove lymph glands to prevent a cancer from spreading, this can damage the lymphatic system.
Radiotherapy where controlled doses of high-energy radiation are used to destroy cancer cells, can also damage the lymphatic system.
Massage Lymphatic Drainage
MLD is used to treat conditions other than lymphoedema, and RLD may be used similarly.
MLD may be useful with the following conditions:-
• Chronic fatigue
• Sinus problems
• Muscular tension
• Aches and pains
• Premenstrual syndrome
What is Facial Reflexology?
Our face, as part of ourself, symbolizes us and therefore represents us wholly. Everything that we are is projected on to our face, in particular our physiological, psychological and even pathological state.
The main objective of facial reflexology - a Vietnamese system of facial acupressure - is to prevent health problems before they begin and to relieve existing troubles before they become entrenched.
The system was originally developed in the 1980's by doctors in Ho Chi Minh City as a less invasive alternative to facial acupuncture.
Made accessible to the West by Nhuan Le Quang, who eimigrated to France, Vietnamese facial reflexology - or Dien' Cham' - promotes a healthy flow of energy throughout the body by stimulation of 57 acupressure points and associated 'reflex zones' on the face.
As with other reflexology systems, such as foot or hand reflexology, it is possible to visualise a projection of the entire human body superimposed over the face. An organ or body part can then be stimulated by massaging the corresponding facial reflex zone.
Source of all Sickness: The Nervous System
It is quite possible to affirm that all sicknesses have, at their origin, a form of fatigue or exhaustion of the nervous system. That is why obtaining some relaxation is an essential notion to Chinese medicine and Dien' Cham'.
Lack of sleep, overwork, almost constant stress, repeated stress, inadequate physical exercise, sadness, depression, psychological shocks, moral or emotional solitude, are states we are all familiar with, which lie at the route of sickness.
They all weaken our immune defences. Consequently our energy decreases and the body is no longer able to fight off attacks by viruses and bacteria, which are present everywhere in the body itself and in the environment. A sickness will generally take hold in the weakest spot.
In Chinese medicine, pain and suffering are always considered to be caused by blocked energy which needs freeing. A sickness is always caused by a problem with the affected organ's energy.
Facial Reflexology techniques are incredibly simple and can be incorporated into your daily routine for long term benefits.
What Kind of Problems may Facial Reflexology Help?

Just to give you a preliminary idea of conditions that you may gain relief from:
• Problems with the back, joints and muscles
• Sexual and genital problems, hormonal upsets
• Skin problems
• Problems of digestion, assimilation and elimination
• Troubles of the nervous sytem
• Circulatory troubles
• Respiratory troubles
• Specific or chronic disorders
• Other such as poor vision, poor hearing, sore throats and related conditions
What Happens during a Facial Reflexology Session?
You will be invited to relax on a reclining chair or therapy couch. You remain fully clothed as only the face is worked on and you are covered with a warm blanket to maintain a comfortable body temperature.
If you have chosen to begin with a facial cleanse, the session begins with this using natural products from the Tropic Skincare Range. This is optional.
The facial reflexology then begins with a facial massage followed by relaxing and toning techniques using rubbing, tapping and circular motions with the fingers on select reflex points on the face.
This is then followed using the same techniques to stimulate or sedate reflexes on the face that relate personally to you. During the consultation before the facial reflexology begins we will have discussed and chosen two or three areas to work on that are specific to you at this time.
Before you leave you will be shown some simple self care energy-giving massage techniques that only require a few minutes each day which can be easily incorporated into your cleansing routine.
A very important secondary benefit: if you do it regularly, stimulation of the face improves circulation. Together with some very simple lifestyle considerations such as drinking plenty of fresh water, eating fruits and vegetables rich in antioxidants, taking in fresh air and light exercise, you may then begin to notice the benefits that this can bring to your skin.
